Breast Fat Transfer

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world, as it effectively enhances the size of the breasts for women who are unhappy with their current appearance. Although this procedure is considered safe, with a very low incidence of risks, many women are hesitant about putting synthetic materials into the body.

Fortunately, there is an alternative treatment available to increase the size of the breasts through natural means. This is done with autologous fat transfer, which moves fat from other areas of the body to the breasts for an increase of up to one whole cup size. This procedure is performed safely and most effectively by an experienced plastic surgeon.

This procedure has many benefits over traditional breast augmentation with implants, including:

  • No risk of implant rejection
  • Ability to shape and sculpt the breasts
  • Minimal incisions
  • Reduced scarring
  • No risk of capsular contracture

In addition to improving the appearance of the breasts, patients are also able to lose unwanted fat from the lower body in the same procedure, for an overall more sculpted appearance.

This procedure is ideal for nearly any woman considering breast augmentation but does not want to use saline or silicone implants. It is important for women to be in good overall health and have enough body fat available to augment the breasts. Like any other cosmetic procedures, women should have realistic expectations for this procedure.

Many women choose to have this procedure performed after achieving unsatisfactory results from an implant procedure. It is also highly effective for women with breast cancer who must undergo a mastectomy, as fat transfer has been used for many years to reconstruct removed breasts.

The Procedure

Natural breast augmentation through fat transfer involves two surgical procedures performed on the same day. First, the fat to be used in the breasts is harvested from another area of the body, most commonly from the waist, buttocks or thighs. This is done by suctioning the fat out through a cannula, similar to the techniques used in liposuction. The harvested fat cells are purified and then injected into small incisions within the breasts.

The whole procedure takes four to six hours to perform. Patients can usually return to work and other light activities after a week. In some cases, one to three fat transfer procedures may be needed in order to achieve desired results. Injected fat may be absorbed by the body and not deliver expected results during the initial procedure.
